What's New in Woodbury MN This Late Summer

For years the running joke among east-metro residents was that a Friday night in Woodbury meant driving to St. Paul. That joke is starting to wear thin. Between last September and this spring, the city added an upscale Asian buffet, an award-winning Italian pasta bar, a Sichuan hot pot destination, a French-Korean bakery, and a second location of a Minneapolis burrito favorite. Read together, these openings mark a genuine shift: Woodbury now has enough range that dinner out no longer requires a bridge.

Here is what has actually opened, what is opening soon, and what is worth putting on the calendar between now and Labor Day.

The dining shift, in one paragraph

Kevin Ni, co-founder of Feast Buffet & Banquet on Woodlane Drive, said the quiet part out loud when he explained his choice of location. In his words, there were not many options in Woodbury, so residents were spending money in other cities that they could have been spending in their own town. Feast opened last September in the old Cowboy Jack's space, and lines stretched out the door with more than 1,000 customers a day after opening. That is not a soft launch. That is pent-up demand.

The 2025 to 2026 openings, mapped

Liliana is the one to watch if you care about how Woodbury reads to the rest of the Twin Cities. The team behind Estelle and Mario's in St. Paul chose Woodbury for a refined Italian concept, and they landed in a space known for tenant turnover. A Yelp reviewer comparing it to its Estelle sister called the meal the best in ages. When St. Paul restaurateurs stop treating Woodbury as a bridge too far, the map has changed.

Feast Buffet & Banquet is worth understanding as a signal, not just a menu. The owners, who also run Sushi Train in Minneapolis and Captain Crab in Brooklyn Center, spent more than eight months designing the build-out inside the former Cowboy Jack's. They picked the location partly because it sits close enough to St. Paul that it can pull traffic from small communities toward Woodbury rather than the other way around. That is a durable inversion of the old pattern.

Listo! is the smaller but telling story. The Minneapolis-based fast-casual has been serving burritos on New Brighton Boulevard since 2018. Its Donegal Drive location is the brand's first move into the east metro. If you liked the original but stopped making the drive, that gap is about to close.

What is happening outside the restaurants

The dining changes matter more when you place them against a calendar of things that are already worth showing up for. Between now and Labor Day, the schedule is unusually full.

• Woodbury Days, August 28 to 30, at Ojibway Park, 2695 Ojibway Drive. The city's signature festival draws roughly 25,000 people across the weekend, with about 200 businesses represented. Expect the Taste of Woodbury with 20-plus food vendors, the Grande Parade on Sunday morning, live music Friday and Saturday nights, a car show, carnival rides at $3 to $7 a ride, and fireworks Saturday around 9:30 p.m. Buttons run $20 for a family four-pack and are required for some activities. Woodbury High School construction is squeezing parking this year, so plan on the shuttles running from Bailey Elementary, Middleton Elementary, and Red Rock Elementary.
• Sounds of Summer Concert Series, remaining dates August 1 and August 15. Three weekends of outdoor music and shopping, and two of them are still ahead.
• Starlight Cinema Outdoor Series at Ojibway Park. The last summer showing is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on August 6, projected on a 40-foot inflatable screen. Pre-show activities start around 7 p.m.
• St. Paul Farmers' Market Woodbury, every Sunday at Red Rock Elementary. Produce grown within 100 miles by local small-business growers, which is the rule that separates this market from a general vendor fair.

If you have a kid under ten, the Woodbury Puppet Wagon is still traveling to more than 20 parks Monday through Thursday from mid-June through mid-August with free shows. It is the sort of programming you forget about until a Tuesday afternoon with nothing planned.

The quieter reason all of this is happening

Restaurants and festivals do not appear because a city is nice. They appear because operators run the numbers. Woodbury's 2025 building permit data helps explain the pattern. The city issued permits for seven new commercial buildings totaling 563,047 square feet, representing roughly $274 million in private and public investment. Strip out the $150 million water treatment plant and there is still real money going into commercial construction, including an Amazon last-mile facility in the Northeast Business Park area. When square footage of this scale gets absorbed, restaurant operators notice.

The retail side is filling in around it. Lupe Development Partners is redeveloping the site across I-494 from Woodwinds Hospital into a new office building of up to 40,000 square feet, with the recently completed Chick-fil-A at 6939 Valley Creek Road and another 5,000-square-foot building in development nearby. The site sits near the Woodbury Theatre stop on the planned Gold Line, the 10-mile bus rapid transit route running along I-94 to downtown St. Paul. The PGA TOUR Superstore opened just in time for Father's Day weekend. An eight-court indoor pickleball facility got a building permit at 390 Commerce Drive near Sam's Club.

Woodbury used to be a place people drove through on their way to something else. The 2026 map suggests that pattern is reversing, one restaurant, one office renovation, and one BRT stop at a time.

A short list for a specific weekend

If you have an out-of-town guest arriving Friday, here is a version of Woodbury that would have been hard to assemble two years ago.

1. Friday dinner at Liliana on City Walk Drive. Order pasta and let the wine list carry the rest.
2. Saturday morning at the St. Paul Farmers' Market at Red Rock Elementary.
3. Saturday lunch at Legendary Spice in Tamarack Village for hot pot, then a lap through the PGA TOUR Superstore.
4. Saturday evening at the Sounds of Summer concert on August 15, followed by dessert at Paris Baguette in Woodbury Lakes.
5. Sunday brunch at Feast Buffet & Banquet on Woodlane Drive, then Woodbury Days at Ojibway Park for the parade and fireworks.

None of those stops require crossing a bridge.

What this means if you already live here

That expansion tends to show up eventually in home values, walkability perceptions, and the way the next generation of buyers thinks about the east metro.
